How it Works
At Mercier Farms we recognize that we can’t grow everything. Snuggled in the middle of apple country we use local farms to supply us with most of our fresh tree fruits. This includes apples, berries, peachs, pears and plums. Some farms allow us to pick the fruits off the trees, which goes directly to our farm stand.
Why Buy Locally?
Most produce in the US is picked 4 to 7 days before being placed on supermarket shelves, and is shipped for an average of 1500 miles before being sold. When you buy local most produce is picked within a day of being placed on the shelves. You can taste the difference and you know where the produce came from. Buying local also supports the local economy.
Environmentally Sustainable
For the past half century, with the advance of new technologies and the reliance on monoculture, mechanization, chemical pesticides, fertilizers, and government subsides, has made food abundant and affordable. However, the ecological and social price has been high. These methods caused many environmental issues including soil erosion, depleted and contaminated soil and water resources to name a few. It also lead to the decline of the small family farms. With the rise of social media and people starting to take more interest in their food, the small family farms are coming back. At Mercier Farms the practices and principles of crop rotation, IPM and Manure management insures us that we don’t contaminate the soil. Manure management allows us to have healthy soil that stores water and nutrients and provides a stable base to support plant roots. Many of the big supermarket requirements still make it impossible for the small farmer to survive. We survive only if people buy local from farms and farmer markets.
